Gathering Space Pilot Policy
About the Space.
Kalena Center, located at the “Triangle,” is an agricultural processing facility with an open-air pavilion. It was built to advance:
(a) local agriculture,
(b) conservation, &
(c) Native Hawaiian knowledge and practices.
Gathering Space Pilot policies are designed to provide broad community access to these facilities, supporting events rooted in mālama ʻāina & cultural sustainability.
Eligibility.
Gathering Space may be reserved by volunteers, staff, practitioners, or partners interested in designing, proposing, & hosting a two-step gathering centered around one or more of (a)–(c).
Step One: Mālama ʻāina or related kākoʻo in Kīpahulu ʻOhana programs, inclusive of all ages, mobility, and skill levels. Kākoʻo is proportionate to the size of the gathering.
Step Two: The Event itself. Events held at Kalena Center must center around one or more activities including, but not limited to:
Farming and food production
Hunting, fishing, and gathering
Lei-making, weaving, and floral work
Lāʻau lapaʻau (traditional healing practices)
Community education and ʻohana-based gatherings
All requests to reserve the Gathering Space will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis, through communications that are respectful, clear, and mindful of the kuleana it takes to maintain and share this resource.
We reserve the right to decline requests that are not aligned with the intent of this space to uplift mea Hawaiʻi and promote community health and wealth.
Community Mālama ʻĀina Offerings
Kīpahulu Ohana, on its own and through its extensive partnerships, organizes regular community mālama ‘āina events while maintaining its own ‘āina, creating innumerable opportunities to kāko’o.
Examples of qualifying activities:
● Loʻi kalo restoration/maintenance at Kapahu Living Farm
● ʻOpihi or marine monitoring support/Makai Watch
● Facility cleaning or maintenance
● Support for community education events
A KOI staff member will assist in coordinating kāko’o opportunities upon serious inquiry. A‘ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia, no task is too big when done together.
